How Tarantino Creates Suspense: Good News/Bad News & Ticking Clocks: How to create suspense

What’s cool about Tarantino is how he uses classical screen tricks to PULL you into the scene. Great directors use the cheapest, simplest tricks. Here Tarantino uses the devices we call GOOD NEWS/BAD NEWS and TICKING CLOCKS to keep the audience excited. I.e., he alternates good news and bad news, quickly, throughout his scenes, and also sets the whole thing to a ticking clock. In this case, that ‘ticking clock’ is the fact that Mia (Uma Thurman) is about to DIE of a drug overdose, unless Vincent (Travolta) can revive her, with the help of a drug dealer, Lance, ( Eric Stolz) and his nutty girlfriend. Now watch how Tarantino PULLS you into the scene by alternating good news and bad news, and setting it ALL to a ticking clock (Mia’s impending death.) Think this is too simple and too cheap for such a genius like Tarantino? Think again! JJ Abrams, Chris Nolan, they are ALL masters of this technique and it pulls you into their storylines like a taut, tightening rope…check out how it works right here…
